Girl math is absolutely taking over the internet (mainly TikTok) by storm. But what is it? And why is it so popular? As a girl myself, I feel like I am equipped to speak on girl math (especially my experience) and let you know what is girl math and why is it so popular.
*I do just want to preface that this is a humorous post, and I do not think you should take this as financial advice lol*
A list of everything in this photo:
- Bag: mango (possibly discontinued 🥺 but all of the bags on their website are beautiful)https://shop.mango.com/gb/search?kw=Bag&brand=she&subBrand=false&origin=recent_search&v=M,S,I,T,V
- Sunglasses: from a hut in Bulgaria (they are probably a dupe for an expensive brand)
- Card holder: https://www.stories.com/en_gbp/bags/wallets/product.leather-card-wallet-green.0950085048.html
- Watch: Rotary (I can’t find it anywhere on the website, I got it from a jewellers)

Firstly… what is girl math?
Girl math is a trend that is going round on TikTok, where girls share examples of how they spend their money / what goes on in their head after each purchase / anything to do with money.
The reason it is trending is because it is mutual between most girls, it’s basically girl code/language, we just understand it. Whereas boys… most of them do not understand it and can’t believe that these are the things that are actually going on in our heads.
Lets get into some examples so I can show you what girl math is really about…
Examples of girl math
Cash is free
This, I fully relate too. I don’t keep as much of a tracker of how much cash I have compared to my online bank, so whenever I spend cash, I literally haven’t spent anything, because nothing comes out of my bank.
Cost per wear
If a jacket is £200, you have to think of how many times you’ll wear it.
So just say you wear it 10 times, thats £20 per wear.
But you know you will definitely wear it more than that, so just say you’ll wear it 50 times, that’s £4 every time you wear it.
To take this even further…
A girl on TikTok said if she sacrifices buying a coffee (which is roughly £4) every time she wears that jacket, then the jacket is basically free!
Buy in advance
If you buy something, like a holiday, or concert tickets, by the time it gets to the actual holiday, it’s basically free because you paid for it so long ago.
And you’ve probably already made up that money by the time the actual holiday or concert comes around.
Sale items
If you buy something that is in the sale for £50, when it was originally £100, then you have made £50 profit, because you would have lost £50 if the item wasn’t in the sale.
Returning stuff means you’re making money
Think about it. You wouldn’t have had that money if you didn’t decide to return that item, so you have pretty much made money when returning.
If money is going in the bank, then you’re basically making money, right?!
Spending less than you thought you would
If you spend less than you thought you were going to spend that day, then you have made money, and have more to spend the next day.
If you think you were going to spend £100, and you only spend £50, you have £50 EXTRA pounds that you weren’t going to have.
Why is it so popular?
I think girl math has became so popular because it is some sort of validation between us girls.
We have been doing girl math subconsciously for a long time, and hearing that we all do this, brings all of the girls together.
It’s like a universal language between us girls, something that boys don’t really understand, and it’s amazing.
Thank you for reading <3
I hope you enjoyed this post! It’s not as long as my other posts, but I really wanted to talk about girl math because ever since I seen the trend, I felt understood, and I felt validated.
