Who has seen the Barbie movie? I’m here to give you my honest and slightly controversial opinions on the Barbie movie, and answer the question: Is the Barbie movie is really worth it?
P.s this may contain spoilers.
Is it worth the hype?
I was late in seeing the Barbie movie, which meant my for you page on TikTok was flooding with everyone’s opinions on the movie, so I was really looking forward to it.
From the hype the movie was getting, I thought it would go a lot deeper into womanhood and being a woman, rather than focusing more on the patriarchy.
If I didn’t listen to anyone’s opinions going into the movie, and went in with no pre conceived hype, I would have enjoyed it more. I was going in waiting for the overly emotional and deep scenes, that just didn’t come. Or maybe they did come, but I was just bracing myself for deeper.
Why is it not worth the hype? What was the let down?
The only thing I was let down by, was the fact I thought they could have gone so much deeper.
Everyone I spoke to was questioning their existence, feeling mentally unstable after, and just generally emotional.
However, I think they should have spent longer on those emotional scenes. They were super quick, and I felt like I didn’t have time to fully process and absorb the emotions before they were back into the action of the movie.
The cellulite scene
There is a scene where Barbie looks down on her leg and she has cellulite. It’s this whole thing of wanting to get rid of the cellulite and get back to normal.
But after the meltdown of hating the cellulite and wanting to get rid of it, it wasn’t mentioned again.
I would have loved for Barbie to have accepted the cellulite, as part of womanhood, and embraced it. However, you never hear or see the cellulite again.
It is okay, and totally NORMAL to have cellulite. I wish this was spoken about in the movie, rather than screaming and trying to get rid of it. (which is relatable during my late teens I won’t lie).
The mother and daughter relationship
I wish they had of talked more about how much mothers sacrifice for their daughters, (and their children in general).
Although saying that… the quote ‘We mothers stand still so our daughters can look back to see how far they’ve come’, really got me.
Mothers revisit their childhood when they have daughters themselves, and on top of that try to make it even better for their daughter.
I love how it was the mother who Barbie was visiting, not the daughter. It is reflective of how the mother needed help in the real world going through so much.
If they had of went more into the mother and daughter relationship, I would have gotten so much more emotional!
What was worth the hype?
So now that the controversial opinions are out there (sorry to all of the people who disagree), lets talk about the things I loved!
The humour
Barbie’s character was so funny without intentionally meaning to be.
I found myself laughing throughout the movie at the dry sense of humour!
The little things that were added throughout the movie, like weird barbie, John Cena, and the last scenes of Barbie going to the gynaecologist, are hilarious!
Weird barbie, is so relatable to all of us, as there are definitely Barbie’s who did not make it, due to being played with too hard!
John Cena was an added bonus because I was NOT expecting to see him come out of the water in a bikini with Dua Lipa.
The last scenes of Barbie going to the gynaecologist were so relatable and funny. I’m sure all of us get nervous, and need to be fully supported to book a gynaecologist appointment lol.
The outfits
The outfits were very nostalgic and reminds me of my Barbie’s outfits!
They were so fabulous, and it is amazing seeing a movie with so much colour!
Everything being pink was very healing for my girly inner child, and has definitely inspired me to wear more pink! (Especially after realising I barely have anything pink)
The music
If you’re wanting an upbeat, lighthearted, fun and girly soundtrack, definitely listen to the barbie soundtrack!
The dance scenes throughout the movie were amazing, reminding me of the cheesy movies I watched when I was younger!
Even the intense scenes, the music was amazing. My favourite being the scene where Barbie is trying to escape from the headquarters and Charlie xcx is playing ‘Speed Drive’.
Margot Robbie
She deserves her own mention, because come on, it’s Margot Robbie.
I don’t think there is anyone that could have been more perfect for the role.
If there is any movie with Margot Robbie in it, even if the movie isn’t good, best believe I am watching it just for her!
I love her character made to highlight the fact that Barbie was made to empower women, rather than tear them down.
As mentioned in the movie, the girls in the real world weren’t the biggest fan of Barbie. This was due to her looking and being stereotypically perfect, a standard which is unattainable for most women.
However, the intentions in which Ruth Handler (the creator of the Barbie doll), made Barbie’s was apparent in the movie. That was great to set the record straight and remind young girls (and women), that you can be anything!
Would I recommend the movie?
Yes.
Overall, although my expectations were let down a little bit, I don’t think that should take away from the fact that it was an enjoyable movie.
I can’t remember a movie being this hyped!
It seems as though it has brought a community of people together! And I have never seen so many people wearing pink to the cinema lol!
Thank you for reading <3
I hope you enjoyed this blog post!
I know my opinions may differ from a lot of people, if you are one of those people, please tell me what you loved about the movie!
Everyone has different experiences, which can shape the way they see things. So I know for a lot of people, this movie was exactly what they needed to see which is great!!
