Having the perfect morning routine is amazing and one of the first steps to a successful day. But it all starts the night before, with your night routine. Here’s the night routine for a successful morning.
Plan your day
This is essential to waking up the next day and being less stressed, knowing exactly what you’re doing and being more productive. One of the key things to a successful morning is to plan your day the night before.
This means you don’t have to think about anything, you just wake up, look at the schedule you planned the night before, and get to work.
Not only can you plan your day so that you get a lot of productive stuff done, you can schedule fun things for yourself, doing things you enjoy. Whether that’s reading or watching an episode or two of your current TV show.
My favourite planner, I have mentioned many times before, is the hello day planner https://www.hellodayplanner.com/ it has everything I need, and it is so aesthetically pleasing.
My tips and tricks to planning
- Write a list of your top 3 to do’s
2. Write a list of your lesser priority to do’s
3. Schedule when you’re going to do it
I love having a planner that has all of this, when I didn’t have this planner, I used to split my blank page into these sections so that I could do this.
- Writing a list of your top to do’s. These are the non negotiable, must get done today (if I’m being honest – this isn’t always the case, so don’t be hard on yourself, we’re not perfect).
- Writing a list of your lesser priority to do’s. These can be the little things you need to do in the day, like checking your emails. I usually add to this throughout the day if I think of anything. And if some of these things don’t get done, that’s fine, they move to the next day!
- Scheduling your day. This is the No1 thing that has helped me be productive. If I wake up and know that I need to do these tasks, but don’t know when I’m doing it, then I probably won’t do them. Having that accountability for myself has been amazing in keeping me productive. It’s the same as you scheduling a doctors appointment – you will show up at that time, so show up for yourself at set times.
I struggle with working on the same thing for long periods of time (I have a very low attention span), which is why I have scheduled 1 hour per task, and then added another hour later on in the day for that same task, if I need to.
Notice how I have scheduled lunch/me time. This is so important. I often used to find myself too busy to take some time for myself. Or I forget to eat because of how busy I was. Now this will not happen. I have time on my lunch break to fuel myself, rest, read, go on tiktok, basically just renew my energy for more work.
P.s. yes I practice manifestation every night (or I try to most night). I am trying to manifest my dream life over here lol.
Clean your space
Now that you’ve planned the following morning, you can forget about it and start winding down. But I know for myself, I can’t wind down if my room is messy.
This is THE PERFECT time in your night routine to habit stack. That means doing something you have to do, and pairing it with something you want to do.
Here are some examples of what you could do whilst tidying your space:
- Listen to music
- Listen to a podcast (Some I recommend are in this post: http://bigsisterera.com/what-you-need-to-do-if-you-hate-your-boss/
- Listen to an audiobook http://bigsisterera.com/book-recommendations/
- Call someone
- Put on your favourite / current to show in the background
Trust me, it makes the time go SO much quicker, and it makes it more enjoyable.
It gives you the time to do some enjoyable things you want to do in your day, if you have a really busy day.
The benefits of having a clean room: (much more detailed info explained amazingly here: https://www.stephilareine.com/2020/06/10-mental-health-benefits-of-a-clean-bedroom.html)
- Gets you off your feet if you’ve been sat at your desk doing work
- Makes you end on a productive note
- Clean room = clean mind (you’ll be less distracted and stressed)
- Better sleep
- Makes you feel cosy and ready to wind down
Turn off from work mode
You won’t get a good sleep if you work right up until you go to sleep.
Even if you haven’t been productive that day and you just haven’t been able to get yourself to do anything (and as a uni student, there has been many days where I have felt like that)…
Don’t beat yourself up about it.
From the wise words of Emma Chamberlain herself:
‘If I let myself relax 100%, that’s not pointless, that’s not a waste of time, it’s only a waste of your time if you’re being mean to yourself while you’re doing it’.
Emma chamberlain
That’s something I’ve had to learn a lot. Sometimes I’ve been so burnt out, physically and mentally exhausted, and when I let myself rest, I’m not even truly resting because I’m thinking about everything that I need to do. I’m beating myself up for resting and not doing work.
This will only cause more burnout! So let yourself turn off from work mode. Let yourself rest and really take time for yourself.
Here’s what you could do:
- Take a bath
- Have a long shower
- Read a book
- Watch your favourite TV show
- Meditate
- Calming yoga
- Cuddle your dog
- Stretch
- Hang out with your friends
- Hang out with your family
- Cook your favourite meal
- Order takeaway and enjoy it
- Any other little things you like doing, painting your nails, drawing, whatever you like (but if you really need rest try not to make it too strenuous physically or mentally)
Lay your clothes/things out the night before
Sports bra: https://uk.shop.gymshark.com/products/gymshark-fraction-sports-bra-white-ss23
Whatever goals you’ve set yourself to do in the morning, whether you want to workout, go on a walk, meditate, oil your hair, drink water… put it out during your night routine, so that when you wake up you see it, you will remember what you need to do.
I wanted to drink water immediately when I woke up, so I put my water bottle on my bedside table, so I see it as soon as I wake up and remember to drink it, it has became a habit now, something I always remember to do.
Another example is I wanted to put rosemary oil in my hair as soon as I woke up, so that I could keep it in for a few hours before washing my hair. What did I do? I put the rosemary oil on my bedside table, so I seen it as soon as I woke up and meant I didn’t forget about it.
I have told myself I wanted to do this before, but I didn’t put the rosemary oil out and I forgot.
So if it’s in sight as soon as you wake up, then you will remember to do it, and are most likely going to do it.
With working out, if your clothes are already out, and you put them on, you are already halfway there to working out.
It also means there is less to think about when you wake up in the morning and you can just focus on following the steps you’ve set out for yourself.
Don’t go on your phone right before bed
This one is easier said than done, and obviously doesn’t happen every night.
But there are so many benefits of not going on your phone before bed:
- You’ll get a better sleep. If you go on your phone before bed, the blue light slows the production of melatonin and lowers tiredness. (Basically blue light mimics daylight and signals to your brain that it is day time and you shouldn’t be sleeping)
- You can be more relaxed without your phone, as being on your phone stimulates your brain and makes it harder for you to fall asleep
- If you want more benefits there is great information here: https://health.clevelandclinic.org/put-the-phone-away-3-reasons-why-looking-at-it-before-bed-is-a-bad-habit/
So if we’re not going on our phone, then what should we be doing?
- Reading – this is one of my favourite things to do in my night routine. I feel like I can fully relax and escape the world. I have a book recommendations page that I will always be adding to (when I read books worthy enough to be on there!) http://bigsisterera.com/book-recommendations/
- Manifestation – this is something I started doing at the start of the year. There are many different techniques (more than I can think of). But the one I’ve been doing is called scripting. (I explain briefly what this is further down!)
- Meditate – if I’m struggling to sleep, I like to listen to sleep meditations, especially ones that focus on deep breathing and helping you fall asleep. This is the free app I use to listen to meditations: https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/insight-timer-meditate-sleep/id337472899
- Stretch – this will ease body and muscle tension, which will make you feel relaxed
- Sipping a warm cup of tea – I don’t know, something about this means it’s ready for bed. There are different flavours of tea you can get that are relaxing like chamomile tea!
Manifestation
The manifestation method called scripting, is when you write in a notebook every night, like a diary entry, but you write about your dream life as if it’s already happened.
E.g. today was amazing, I drove my new Range Rover to my favourite Pilates class, grabbed a smoothie with my Pilates friends, did some work in a little cafe. I feel so lucky that I am living my dream life. I am so grateful. Thank you Universe.
When you’re writing as if it’s already happened, and you allow yourself to feel the emotions as if you’ve lived them, it puts you on that same frequency. It signals to your brain that what you’ve just wrote about is real life. Your brain will do everything to create that reality for you.
I am no manifestation expert. I saw the scripting method on TikTok, and thought I would give it a go. If anything, it makes me feel happy at the end of the day and gives me so much hope for my future life. It’s nice to always think positive, and think that the universe is always working in your favour.
Sleep meditation
The free app Insight timer is amazing. They offer sleep meditations, stress and anxiety meditations, gratitude, affirmations, and more.
I read that when you go to sleep, your subconscious brain is still awake, so whatever it’s listening to is being absorbed. This is important because everything from your beliefs, emotions, things you read and listen to, gets stored in your subconscious brain.
This means if you’re feeding your subconscious brain negative words and affirmations when you go to sleep, then eventually, that will be your beliefs. So it is very important what you let yourself listen to and how you speak to yourself.
So, now you know how to create a night routine to have a successful morning!
I hope this post was helpful on creating the night routine to have a successful morning!
