I went into the Serpent and Dove series with absolutely no expectations because I got the first book for free and had never heard of it before.
I feel like that’s the best way to go into a series, with no knowledge or pre made conceptions of it.
Your reactions are then 100% genuine in real time with reading the book and you get the full effect.
So let’s dive in… I will keep this as spoiler free as I can, however when talking about the second and third books, there will naturally be spoilers, so I would just read the first section of the first book review if you haven’t finished or started the series.
I also just want to say they are all on kindle unlimited!
Book 1 – Serpent and Dove spoiler free
There are two types of people in this book, witches and not witches.
To be a witch is your one way ticket to being hunted by a chasseur (a witch hunter) and burned at the stake, so you cannot announce yourself unless you want to fight.
Lou is a witch, however she fled her coven 2 years ago, now living in Cesarine, stealing whatever she can to get by.
In this book we follow Lou, a witch, and Reid, a witch hunter, who end up in a forced marriage, requiring Lou to live in the chasseur tower full of witch hunters.
Unbeknownst to Reid, Lou is a witch, leaving their marriage and situation risky for Lou.
As they spend more time together, will their growing feelings be enough if the truth ever comes out?
MY OPINIONS
As you know, this series really took me by surprise.
I rated this book a 4.5⭐️ which is what I rate books that I really loved, but just weren’t quite up there with my other 5 stars.
It was quite easy to grasp what was going on, I know fantasy world building can be difficult to wrap your head around, but this one was fairly simple.
The only thing that was quite difficult is the fact that the names of places is in French, so that’s quite hard in the beginning to remember.
WARNING
I am now going to be talking about books 2 and 3 in the series, so naturally there will be spoilers ahead that you will need to read book 1 to understand.
Book 2 – ‘Blood and Honey’ spoiler free
Based on the end of book 1, Lou, Reid, Coco and Ansel are now on the run from most people, putting them in a lot of danger, and making the book VERY tense.
They desperately need allies if they are wanting to have a fighting chance against the witches (and most chasseurs) who want them dead.
But where are they going to find allies when their group contains a dame rouge witch, a dame blanch witch, and two ‘witch hunters’.
Could this be putting them in more danger as they travel far and wide to look for allies? How are they going to convince anyone to ally with them?
MY OPINIONS
This was my least favourite book in the Serpent and Dove series, but definitely not to say that this was bad!
In this book they’re in limbo, not knowing what’s going to happen, so you’re uncertain.
I still rated this 4 ⭐️ because you get to know the characters even deeper throughout this book which is good.
I love Ansel even more, he’s so cute and pure.
Book 3 – ‘Gods and Monsters’ spoiler free
After going into hiding in Book 2, gathering all the allies she can find, the time has come to face the music.
After suffering a devastating loss, the need for revenge takes over more than ever.
Since book 1, Lou has changed drastically as a person, but is that a good thing? Will the closest to her stick by her with these changes? Or can they figure out a way to make sure these changes don’t consume her forever?
MY OPINIONS
I was scared of the last book in the Serpent and Dove series because I was heartbroken at the end of the second book, and thought I could potentially lose it during this book.
The plot twist at the start of this book kept me on the edge of my seat and wanting to throw my book across the room multiple times.
I rated this a 4.5 ⭐️ which was a good way to end off the series!
I felt really emotionally attached to the characters in this book by the end of it, and I will say, although still heartbroken, I was happy with the ending!
Thank you for reading <3
I hope this was useful in helping you decide whether to read the Serpent and Dove series! I would definitely recommend it, especially if you like the idea of witches, wolves, romance, enemies to lovers, etc.
If there is any other fantasy romance series that you would recommend, definitely let everyone know in the comments!
I have just finished the second book (Iron Flame) in the Fourth Wing series by Rebecca Yarros, and it was INCREDIBLE. Definitely has the potential to be my favourite series of all time (because it is unfinished)!
