I read my first fantasy book (The Six of Crows duology) in January of 2023 (as a die hard romance lover) and ever since then, I have been converted and want to read more fantasy books.
Don’t get me wrong, I still LOVE a romance book, and will definitely continue to read them, however, now that I have read fantasy, I feel like a plain romance book has to be amazing for me to stay interested.
But when you get an amazing romance AND an interesting fantasy plot, what more could you want?
1. Crescent City series by Sarah J Maas
Sarah J Maas has absolutely killed the fantasy books game.
ACOTAR absolutely changed my life, it’s still probably one of my favourite series, along with the Throne Of glass.
So you better believe that I am going to read the Crescent City series, and I do have high hopes because of how much I love Sarah J Maas.
What is it about?
The series is about a half Fae and half human called Bryce Quinlan who is seeking revenge after her close friend is murdered.
Once the accused murderer is behind bars, you’d think it was over right? No.
She is thrown into the centre of the investigation when more murders start to take place.
2. Harry Potter by J.K Rowling
I know, I can’t believe I haven’t read the Harry Potter series either. It’s probably one of the most famous fantasy books of all time!
But this is definitely the year I do!
I really want to start reading it around September time. September is when they go to Hogwarts school and it’s also the end of summer, ready for me to start getting into the Halloween vibe. It also gives me time to try and read the series before / during Christmas time!
There’s nothing like Harry Potter at Christmas time!
I feel like because I have watched the movies, it’ll be a lot easier to get through because it is a long series, so it doesn’t feel as overwhelming.
And I can’t wait for even more detail about the Harry Potter world, because the movies are already pretty detailed. Finding out even more about the characters and reading little details that aren’t in the movies will be so good!
What is it about?
I’m pretty sure everyone will have a rough idea about what Harry Potter is about, but for those who don’t I will try and do it justice!
Harry Potter finds out that he is a wizard, and is invited to attend Hogwarts, a school of witchcraft and wizardry.
He learns that he is well known in Hogwarts as the boy who lived.
He goes from not knowing Hogwarts existed, to being thrown into this crazy world, trying to figure out how he connects to it all, making friends and enemies along the way!
3. The Inheritance Games series by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
I first heard about this series from Rachel Catherine. (instagram: rrachelcatherine, YouTube: https://youtube.com/@RachelCatherine?si=DMgloGMEMldfgbP7) The way she described it had me absolutely hooked!
Not that you should judge a book by their cover…but I think the cover of these books are so cool!
I’m not sure if there’s any romance in these books (I’m hoping there is), but I think the plot in this series seems to be very interesting and would keep me hooked even without any romance!
I have heard that this is perfect for people who love ‘One of us is lying’ and ‘Knives Out’, which, I love them both!
What is it about?
Avery Grambs goal is to survive high school so she can leave. However her plans drastically change when she is left the fortune of billionaire Tobias Hawthorne, when he dies. Seems great right?
Here’s the catch… she doesn’t actually know who this man is.
To receive the inheritance she has to move into the Hawthorne house, that is filled with riddles and puzzles.
But she is not alone in this house. Tobias Hawthorne’s family (who didn’t receive the inheritance) also live there. They are most likely angry and confused as to why this girl has the fortune that they thought they’d receive.
4. The Fourth Wing series by Rebecca Yarros
I have heard nothing but good things about this series, especially on TikTok!
I feel like I can trust the TikTok hype, because I found ACOTAR from TikTok, so that means a lot!
And from what I’ve heard, it gives me major ACOTAR vibes!
Reading this is definitely on my top to do list otherwise I am going to spoil it for myself on TikTok lol.
What is it about?
Violet Sorrengail planned to enter into the scribe quadrant to live a quiet and peaceful life. That all changed when her commanding general (aka her mother) ordered her to be a part of the many candidates training to be dragon riders.
The competitive and stressful environment is a little different from the peaceful life of a scribe… can she handle it?
Thank you for reading <3
I hope this post gave you some inspiration for fantasy books to put on your wish list this year!
Let me know if you have read any of these, and let me know if you have any other recommendations in the comments!
