As life goes on and I’m getting deeper into my twenties (I’m literally 21 why am I being so dramatic lol), I am constantly looking for easy self care ideas that I can do at home, but also make me feel special.
I feel like with every new day becomes another thing that life throws at you, even if it’s just the stress of the unknown, and figuring everything out.
So why not take some time to forget about your stresses and do some easy self care rituals from the comfort of your own home!
1. Solo movie night
I have recently been making an effort to have more solo movie nights and watch more movies.
Now theres nothing wrong with watching your favourite films on repeat (I still plan to do this), but sometimes after you have seen the same movie so many times, you start to tune it out because it is so familiar, and you may still be overthinking about life.
When you watch a new movie, you have to actually pay attention (I know – as someone with the attention span of a fish this is quite hard).
But, this makes it a lot easier to immerse yourself in the story and forget about life for a few hours.
That being said here is some of the ways I like to do to make my movie nights extra ✨special✨:
🧦Comfy PJ’s🧦
There is nothing better than intentionally getting into a fresh set of pjs, especially if they are matching.
I have recently bought some matching sets from Primark and I am in love! They are SO soft and comfy AND affordable!
🎂Candles🎂
I don’t light my candles everyday, not because I ‘save’ them for occasions, but honestly because I forget or get lazy.
So when I do light my candles, I know I am in for a special, pamper / self care night.
Not only does it make the room look so cosy and a VIBE, it makes your room smell delicious!
My candle recommendations:
FYI, I will forever be a warm, cosy, vanilla, chocolate, caramel, cookie, lover when it comes to the smell of my candles, no matter what time of year it is.
🍿Snacks🍿
You’re telling me when you go to the cinema you don’t bring snacks? It’s the same thing for an intentional solo movie date with yourself.
Treat yourself to some snacks and make it a whole thing.
You have to romanticise your life when you’re by yourself just as much as when you’re with other people, because you are special too.
My snack recommendations:
Depending on how hungry you are and what you’re feeling, take your pick!
- A trusty chocolate bar!
- Pizza
- Popcorn
- A chocolate squares bar (specific, but I promise you will become addicted)
- M&M’s (something about them screams movies idk)
- Crisps (Pringles, Doritos, Sensations, Hula Hoops)
2. Long bath
Set aside at least 2hrs to get the full self care experience, (and make sure no one else wants in the bathroom for anything lol).
A long hot bath is basically a substitute for a sauna, and you always feel so good after a sauna.
The benefits of a long, warm bath:
- They help you relax. Showers are great, but getting to lie down in what feels like a warm blanket, feels so nice and relaxing.
- They can help you sleep better. After a lovely warm bath, I always feel so ready to sleep whenever I have a bath in the evening.
- Soothes sore muscles. I always feel like jelly after I get out of the bath, hence why you get to sleep better because you’re not tight, if that makes any sense.
- They can reduce stress. Setting aside time for yourself to do this easy self care ritual will help you ease any stress or anxiety you have.
How to make your bath special:
🫧Bubbles🫧
There’s nothing that elevates a bath more than bubbles.
They make the bath feel so much more special, and it feels like you can relax more because you are covered in a blanket of bubbles.
🕯️Candles / mood lighting 🕯️
Not that there’s anything wrong with a bright bathroom, but a darker, cosier bathroom when you are having a self care bath feels more luxurious and relaxing.
And to add to the lovely smells from the bath, the candles will make the room smell SO delicious!
🛀A bath pillow 🛀
When you whip out the bath pillow, you already know that it’s going to be a LONG, luxurious, and relaxing bath.
Sometimes when you’re not washing your hair, it’s hard to lie your head back without getting your hair wet and being comfy at the same time. A bath pillow will mean that you can relax your head and not worry about getting your hair wet too.
🎬Comfort TV show / movie🎬
I’d pick something that doesn’t take a lot of brain power to watch. We’re relaxing and definitely not using a lot of our brain trying to figure out what’s going on in a movie.
So throw on your favourite comfort movie or tv show, and allow yourself to have this time to relax and turn your mind off!
3. Read
If you don’t like reading, then you can skip this one. Self care does not mean forcing yourself to do something you don’t want to do, because then you’re not going to get that mental rest and reset.
Now, for those that do like reading, you’ll know how much of a de stress ritual it is.
It’s like watching a movie, it just transports you into another world entirely, and you can just think about that for a while.
How to make it more special:
☕️A warm drink☕️
Whatever drink you choose, a cup of tea, hot chocolate, matcha, coffee, etc, it just makes the experience a lot cosier and relaxing.
Bonus points if you use your special / fancy mugs! Because every day is a special occasion, especially if you are making time for having a self care night!
🧶Get cosy🧶
Whether that’s getting into comfy clothes (depending on the time of day and what you have to do), or just wrapping yourself in a warm blanket, getting cosy is an essential part.
You don’t want to be distracted by not feeling comfortable and cosy.
Taking the time to set up for reading, makes it more of a special occasion, and a pamper / self care ritual.
🔥Fireplace / music🪵
Putting some cosy music, or the fireplace channel on YouTube will immediately set the vibe.
Bonus points if it’s a real fireplace.
There’s something about setting your environment up for reading.
Sure, you can read anywhere, on the bus, in the car before work, but I sometimes feel rushed and haven’t gotten the full experience.
So when I set my environment up to be cosy, I feel like I am truly giving myself this time to enjoy the book.
Thank you for reading <3
I hope this post was useful in giving you some at home, easy self care ideas.
Movie nights, long baths, and reading are something you think of straight away when you think of at home self care, but making them special and letting yourself enjoy every moment will truly make all the difference!
Let me know if you have any other self care ideas that you can do at home, and let me know if you try any of these!
